In November last year I went to Womb Yoga Teacher Training with Uma Dinsmore-Tuli. Being around 44 beautiful yoginis standing in their divine feminine energy was, to say the least, empowering.

I came away with lots of new practices and information about women’s health including menstrual problems, subfertility, pregnancy and menopause but the most important thing I took away with me was confirmation to follow my own intuition.

Although I have times of doubt, I know that this is the message that means the most for me and it is what I would most like to pass on to my students.

I don’t know at what point I stopped trusting my intuition or if I ever really did but yoga has brought me back to this time and time again. Uma said on the first day ‘You all know this stuff already!’ and that’s powerful in itself.

We live in a world where it’s easy to look outside to find any sort of contentment or happiness. Learning to listen to the voice inside gives us another way to find this happiness in the craziness.

On the training we talked about what we would ideally like to implement into our practice and into our lives and then try to do one percent of that. The one percent can make all the difference.

Could you listen to the inner teacher that one percent more? Maybe you have an intense physical yoga practice and your body needs rest. Maybe you don’t have a physical practice at all and your body needs movement. Maybe it’s saying no to someone. Maybe it’s following your heart in a relationship instead of trying to please others.

Every day at the end of the practice Uma offered us an affirmation- we could choose to repeat it if it resonated and it did for me: ‘With great respect and love, I honour my heart, my inner teacher.’ In a world where we are told how to look, think and act through media, advertising and cultural norms it is so refreshing to be able to turn inwards to find the answers that are inside every one of us.
