aboutI started practising yoga in 2009 and tried out various styles for the next few years.  At this point I really felt the physical benefits of yoga asana or ‘postures’ and really enjoyed how I felt afterwards. I loved how the practice could be as challenging and strong or as relaxed as I like.  It wasn’t until I went to India for the first time in 2012 that I started to look at the other aspects of yoga and the more I learned, the more intrigued I became.  I learned about the 8 limbs of Ashtanga Yoga according to the ancient text, the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali and began a journey that still continues today learning about yoga and ultimately myself.

A year after that first trip to India, I decided to take a break from my work as a social worker in Edinburgh and go back to India to do my first Yoga Teacher Training in Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga with Samyak Yoga (www.samyakyoga.in). I had met my teachers Trupta and Rakesh the first time in India and when I decided to do my training I chose to do it with their school. This was an intensive month of training but I could not have asked for kinder, more encouraging teachers. It was a unique experience that I am so grateful to have had.

I moved home to Ireland and started teaching yoga classes and was then introduced to Yoga Synergy (www.yogasynergy.com) through my teachers in the Yoga Shala in Galway. I immediately loved the style and wanted to continue learning so I did two online courses: The Anatomy & Physiology of Yoga and Yoga Fundamentals and decided to go back to India to train with the founders of the yoga synergy style: Simon Borg Olivier MSc BAppSc (Physiotherapy) and Bianca Machliss BSc BAppSc (Physiotherapy) . Simon and Bianca are both trained physiotherapists and have a wealth of knowledge of the anatomy and physiology of yoga. During this training, I was so inspired by them and learned how to teach safely and effectively for Western bodies.

Yoga is more than a physical exercise, it is a way of life. Today, so many people are living their daily lives in a tense, stressful way leading to physical and emotional difficulties.  I believe yoga helps us find a balance and restore harmony in our world.
